Two things make Solvay unlike the village three miles up the road. The first is electricity. It also has the highest electric heating share of any place in Onondaga County at 41.4 percent, against 56.5 percent on utility gas, which means a Solvay no-heat call is markedly more likely than anywhere else in this metro to be a breaker or a baseboard circuit rather than a furnace. Jumping to combustion questions here wastes the visit. The second is the permit position. The village publishes examples of work needing a building permit, and the list runs to new buildings, additions, remodeling, pools, sheds, fences, decks, demolition, fireplaces and woodstoves. Furnaces, boilers and air conditioning are not named on it. That is not an exemption and should never be read as one, it simply means the question cannot be settled from the website, and the village says to call Code Enforcement on (315) 468-1679 if you are unsure.
